The Body Benchmark Project is the major global research initiative behind development of The Body Volume Index (BVI) to create a new measurement standard for healthcare.

The three-year clinical research project was launched in March 2007 and has involved benchmarking BVI for its numeric value, clinical applications, public health applications and patient care.

The first aim of the project was to assess the validity and diagnostic performance of body volume imaging to diagnose obesity when compared to various body composition techniques and obesity measures, and secondly, to assess the correlation between body volume related to cardiovascular health risk.
